New Trends in Shopping

Shopping has changed over recent years.

Today learning how to shop has become more complicated and varied. There are not only different types of shops but the modality in which to shop has changed. Some things locals take for granted are not so evident to foreigners. For example the way in which we weigh our food differs from the American system and people looking for inches and pounds coming from the Far East are going to be disappointed.

Shopping which was relegated to the individual store became something associated with the shopping centre, which then later evolved into the shopping mall.

It was first apparent that is shops providing different services become associated commercially and share the rent of an area, which would attract shoppers for different items other than the ones that the shopper intended to purchase. A potential customer would associate one location with the next in his search of a commodity and store owners would also have a chance how they could work together so as not to carry the same line of goods or if they wanted to, well then they would each to become more competitive.

What was modern 50 years ago and that is the classic department store with an individual department on every floor is passé in Montreal. Today those spaces have been renovated into smaller sale kiosks each one specializing in a particular niche. So places like Eaton's that were family run have now evolved into terraces so that the shopper can relax within a concourse and make an afternoon out of a purchasing an item.

Obviously the interest was commercial in as much as the business complex owner wanted his merchants to be satisfied with a steady flow of potential clientele. So he began to develop comfort zones where the buyer would stay longer and then spend more, later in the day.

Today people are up to opening specialty shops that died when the large store chains like Woolworth's have died too. One idea has been to make natural soaps for people who are skin conscious and can only find perfumed products. This would cater to health conscious people much in the same way that body shops began when they began to cater to matching different elements to different body creams and lotions in order to widen the appeal for body care.

People have been buying off the internet for about a decade now, so this is not new but the way that software programs are being used in storefronts is. So I could go by a storefront, press on some sensitive glass and get a listing of the inventory a store has. How this trend will progress is difficult to say. Many people like to shop by seeing and touching the physical article and the software programs could be used to enhance that ability.
