Nine Points on Dubai's Success

How Dubai has been been able to succeed.

The success of Dubai has probably been its moderate approach to Islam and by that I am referring to its success as an international urban region. Dubai together with other Arab sheikdoms form what is known to as the United Arab Emirates. The sheikdom started off as a land of no distinction where there was a lot of misery and poverty but soon the family that controls the region then and now started to modernize it. They started to rebuild the port and attract foreign investment to do so. Where did they get the money? It started with a modest amount of oil wealth: a couple of wells drilled into the sand gave the country a start. Here are the reasons for its success:

  1. The region is particularly successfully because of its tolerance and acceptance to different ways of thought. While it caters to foreign arrivals that visit on occasional business and then leave, so as to bring their expertise to the sheikdom, it is also a Muslim country. It also abides by the rules of Islam.
  2. Another reason for its success is that the region continually reinvents itself. Its ruler applies innovative technology to give his country a technological boost with the rest of the Arab world and with the world in general. Where else have you heard of islands being created out into the sea to increase in the shoreline? A recent engineering design has been applied to the coast so that many more people can face the sea directly. Their properties are worth a fortune.
  3. Continued oil wealth
  4. Investment as a company on foreign development projects such as one occurring at Vancouver and many other countries around the world.
  5. The region offers strategic stability in a volatile area where there are continuous conflicts. The wars do not seem to shake up the royal family, which has in the meantime succeeded in building the tallest hotel that happens to be seven stars, if you can believe that.
  6. The country is always in the mode of creating firsts and it has not slacked off. So it is currently engineering a plan to build the largest airport, which will greatly outdo its current one in terms of foreign traffic. It is in the process of completing the tallest building that can be heightened if need be.
  7. The country's rulers are not in the business of promoting fundamentalism or anything else that will foment dissent. It allows people to attend worshiping places if they want to and if they don't they can go to any of the clubs that are present.
  8. The country sells itself as a kind of company that is investing abroad in real estate, in order to plant the seeds of success elsewhere. Engineers are involved in building projects since real estate is what Dubai is good at.
  9. The country is also investing in an alternative to oil exploration. It seems that the sheikh is wise beyond his years in understanding that the future of his country lies in a safer, reusable energy sources that will not contribute to the brown haze over his region.

There is only one mention I have regarding the last point, there are no synagogues in the country and I do not know about the success of Buddhist temples and churches. So if it wants to call itself tolerant as far as religion is concerned, it is going to have to face that question.
