EBay: The First 13 Years

Yes, you read it correctly: 13 years. EBay was founded in September 1995 by a man named Pierre Omidyar, who lives in San Jose. He wanted his site - then called "AuctionWeb '- to be an online marketplace, and the first written code for it in a weekend. It was one of the first sites of its kind in the world.

The name eBay comes from the area Omidyar used to its site. his company called Echo Bay, and the "eBay AuctionWeb" was originally just one part of Echo Bay's website. First thing ever sold on the site was Omidyar's broken laser pointer, which he obtained for $ 14.

The site quickly became popular massively, as sellers came to list all sorts of strange things and buyers actually purchased. Based on the confidence seemed to work remarkably well, and the fact that the site could almost be left alone to run itself. The site has been designed from the outset to collect a small fee on each sale, and it is Omidyar that the money used to pay for the expansion AuctionWeb. The costs quickly added up to more than his current salary, and he decided to quit his job and work on the site full time. At this point in 1996, he added that the comments of facilities, to allow buyers and sellers rate each other and make the buying and selling safe.

In 1997, Omidyar changed AuctionWeb - and his company - called eBay, which is what we called the site for a long time. He began to spend a lot of money for advertising, and he designed the logo eBay. It was in this year that one millionth item was sold (it was a toy version of Big Bird from Sesame Street).

Then, in 1998 - the peak of the dotcom boom - eBay has become big companies, and investments in Internet companies at the time allowed him to bring in senior managers and corporate strategists, who took in public on the stock market. He began to encourage people to sell more than a simple collection, and quickly became a huge site where you can sell anything, big or small. Unlike other sites, though, eBay has survived at the end of the boom, and is still strong today.

EBay, the year 1999 has seen the world, the launch sites in the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany. EBay purchased half.com, an Amazon-like online retailer, in 2000 - the same year she presented Buy now - and bought PayPal, an online payment service, in 2002.

There are now literally millions of items bought and sold every day on eBay, the world over. For every $ 100 spent online worldwide, it is estimated that $ 14 was spent on eBay - it's a lot of laser pointers. Now that you know the history of eBay, perhaps you want to know how it could work for you? Our next message will give you an idea of the possibilities.
