Being Aggressive in Finding a Job

Why being aggressive is important to getting a job.

Going out to get a job is like going out to fish in the sea. There are other fishermen out there seeking the same fish you are hoping to get. It is a tough job unless you are aggressive. The take if or leave it attitude can only result in failure to find a job of any description. It is important that you be aggressive to get work.

Have you heard of people who can't find a job? Do you really believe them? I somehow can't really believe it totally. I do believe that a person cannot always find a job they like. I also believe that a person cannot always find the exact job that matches his/her qualifications or skills. I even believe that a person might be unable to get a job immediately even when they are highly qualified in an area of expertise. But I do not believe anyone who tells me they have been seeking employment for over a year and cannot find anything. At that point, I believe they are not telling the whole truth. I believe they have not been aggressive/or did not want a job.

There were several times that I needed a job badly. I would go constantly to the person in charge and tell them how badly I needed to work. I went so frequently that finally they offered me two jobs. Another time I needed a job. I needed it immediately. It was a survival thing, and I told my family I would not be returning home that day until I landed a job of some kind. I stayed out all day, but at the end of the day I had gotten two part-time jobs. Yes, I was aggressive, and God rewarded my persistence.

I had a relative who came to stay with us. He told me he wanted to get a job. I believed him. He ate, slept, and enjoyed the conveniences of our home for five months, but never obtained work. Finally, I figured out, he did not want a job. He wanted to live off of us as long as he could. After confronting him, he got a small job. It's amazing how fast a people can find a job if they have to!

There are desirable jobs, and less desirable jobs. None of us really like the less desirable jobs, but they have to be done. It is these kinds of jobs that people tend to run from. It is the more desirable, prestigious jobs that people tend to run to. I maintain, that when you really need a job, it will not matter. If it is lawful, and you can have an income, then take it until you can do better.

Being aggressive means to move even when you don't want to move. I remember getting up early in the morning and calling for jobs each morning. I got them. No, I didn't want to get up out of my warm bed and go outside to the pay phone to call for work, but I did it, and I got a job each time. Being aggressive sometimes means making your own job. I have done this too. Sometimes you will starve just waiting on others to call you. You can do odd jobs or think up ways to generate funds by helping others who need help for a low price.

I know of a lady. She had taught school for some years, but decided to enter a new career. Her job was a distance from her home and she had just had a baby. She became aggressive, learned how to write grants, and started her own business. Today, she and her husband have paid off their home, and she has made a very excellent income from her second career.

You have heard the expression, "Don't call me. I'll call you." Well, for the aggressive person, this is no news. The aggressive person reverses this by doing just the opposite. They call the employer back and check on their status. If their status happens to be in the trash can, they reapply. This can help to make things happen. Last of all, you can make things happen. Believe that there is a job out there for you, and there is. Believe that you will get the job, and you will. Believe that God will help you as you help yourself, and He will. Be aggressive and you will succeed.
