Why won't anyone hire me?
Ever ask yourself that question, or why can't I get a better job than the one I have now? The trick is what you put into your resume, how you present it and how well you introduce yourself to the potential employer. Employers want to know not only what you can do for them and how you will contribute to them, they also want to know YOU , what do you do in your community? Are in involved with a charity or other great cause? What are your hobbies? What do you like to do and where do you plan on going in your life?
I have a few tips that might make your resume stand out a little more.
- Write down on paper everything you have ever done in chronological order (the most recent to the oldest), if you are recent high school grad put things down that you did in high school for example: Baseball (started 2nd base/relief pitcher), or President of Future Business Leaders of America Club (sophomore thru senior year). Even if you do not have work experience employers will still read your resume.
- Go on the web and research everything you can about the company you want to work for. This will help you with the determining your goals of working with that company. Write down specific details (Year Company was developed, how many employees they have, education requirements, etc). This will also help you in the interview should they call you.
- Always type your resume, use spell check and be very neat and orderly, employers want to see that you can organized no only physically but mentally. Put some thought and neatness into your resume. Also be short and to the point, managers do not have a lot of time nor do most have tolerance for spelling errors or sloppy work. Remember the more time they spend on your resume the better it will be for you.
- Use the following format for jobs you apply for (in most cases this works):
Full Name: In left hand corner 1 inch from the top of paper (8 ½ x 11 and always white)
Address: Full complete home address and mailing address
Telephone Number: With area code
Cell Phone Number: With Area Code
Email Address: As Many As You Use
Objective: What do you want to do for this company and where you would like to go. Employers want to know what you goals are. Don't be afraid to tell them, most people are changing jobs about every five years now to better themselves so companies like honesty.
Education: Name of High school, College, Trade Schools and when you completed them (month and year), always put in chronological order (most recent first).
Experience: What work experience you have put here (in chronological order most recent first). If you do not have any work experience put down things you did in School, Volunteer work, etc. Remember employers want to know you not just what you can do for them.
Awards: Put any and all awards you have received, employers want to see what you have accomplished. This will let them know that you are not afraid to think outside the box and are willing to do what it takes to get the job done. Have proof with you when you go to the interview.
References: Always put on demand (Use people you have know for awhile (2 years or more and let them know or ask them if they will give you a good reference. Have their phone number and email address handy when you go to the interview.
- If you fill out an application for the job you are applying for use your resume to fill in the blanks and attach your resume to the application. Your resume will cover areas that the application will not in most cases.
Take you time, put some thought into it and you will have success.
