First of all, negotiate benefits at the right time with right items. What is the right time for you to negotiate your possible benefits? You are wise to carry out the plan for negotiation before your boss shows interest in employing you, or he or she has decided to employ you, and it is before you sign an employment contract with your boss. If you do it too early, you may lead a way to the failure to find a position in the company. If you do it too later, you may lose the chance to state it clearly in the contract which can guarantee your benefits. What benefits are you thinking about?

Third, negotiate with your boss item by item, and make each of them fixed. Don't let them in an either-will-do situation. In order to do it better, you are suggested that you should make some preparations ahead, and make a good list of them, with your expectation followed. Then, put them in your mind. Don't take the paper out and show it to your boss.

Fourth, remember to weigh yourself in the job market, and take your boss's attitude into consideration. So, you will have a clear idea about your possible benefits, for example, you will know if you can get a profit sharing, bonuses, etc.

Fifth, do it tactfully, and do not put it too hard for your boss. Always show your respect to your boss, and let him or her know that you respect his opinion, but you may have a different idea on some of them. That's a way to negotiate friendly but effectively. Otherwise, it does your no good.
