Timeless Traits of Leadership

"You can do anything you set your mind to do, and don't you forget it." - Rear Admiral Charles C. Kirkpatrick, Superintendant, United States Naval Academy 1962-1964.

There is a card in my wallet that I never leave home without, but it is not a credit card. My friend and colleague, retired United States Navy Rear Admiral David R. Ellison presented this card to me in October, 2006. He couldn't have known the impact it would have. I had suffered a personal failure and subsequent blow to my confidence some years earlier. By reminding me of who I am and where I come from, Admiral Ellison changed the direction of my life. The card says simply this:

A Leader...

  1. Internalizes Uncompromising Character
  2. Critically Analyzes Challenges
  3. Maintains Physical Fitness
  4. Recognizes and Siezes Responsibility
  5. Executes within Authority
  6. Accepts and Demands Accountability
  7. Possesses Professional Will and Humility
  8. Leads by Example
  9. Speaks with Authority
  10. Exudes Optimism and Enthusiasm
  11. Strengthens and Inspires Others

Admiral Ellison is now the President and Superintendant of New Mexico Military Institute, where he instills these traits in the leaders of tomorrow. He personifies each and every one of these traits

Thanks, Dave. I'm back in the saddle. Keep up the good work.

Excellent list. Shouldn\'t the gentlemen running for President of the US exhibit these traits? Shouldn\'t that be a job requirement? Oh . . . you are right. We sure wouldn\'t have any qualified candadites, would we!

Good job Roger!
