Adverts are everywhere, on TV, on web sites, on your closes, on objects, radio, ect.
Advertising is accepted and expected, people don’t see anything wrong in a product being advertised, they think that if a product is on TV, it must be good, that’s the advertiser main propose.
Advertisers use some strategies, to convince you to buy their products. Some of their commercials have nothing to do with the product, is a lifestyle rather than the product. Here are some strategies that they often use:
Ideal kids or families
In many adverts on TV, is usual to show up a family, more like a Perfect family, with a hip looking, hottest fashions, haircuts and toys. Those families represent the types of people that kids watching the commercial would like themselves or their families to be like; and for accomplish that, they must buy the product being advertised.
But it isn’t true, buying their product, won’t make them perfect, but the advertisers don’t care, they just want your money.
Star power
For example, your favourite movie star is telling you that their product is the best. You believe it and buy it, not realising that the star is being paid to promote that product.
You buy the product thinking that if the movie star is good, so is the product or that if you buy the product, one day you will become like the star.
But the stars have nothing to do with the product, she/he may haven’t heard of the product before.
Advertises only pay them to promote their product, to attract the attention of watchers and fans of the movie star.
Sounds good
Music and other sound effect of commercials may add excitement and attention of the watchers, especially commercials for kids.
It may be your favourite music or other invented by advertisers. So that music stays stuck in your head, and when you see the product in the stores, you remember the music, or when you hear that music, you remember the product, making you to buy it.
Have you ever noticed that the background music is higher than the sound for the program that follows?
Tricky words
According to law, advertisers have to tell the truth about that product, but sometime they use words or slogans that may mislead watchers. Words like: “because you deserve it” or “because we care” or “the taste is real” or even “Now with better tasting”.
Just look for that in any commercial.
Become cool
Advertisers try to convince you that if you don’t buy their product you are a nerd.
Normally they do this by showing in adverts people who don’t look cool, testing their product, and then, somehow they become hip-looking or doing cool things.
This advertising thing is needed but advertisers are exaggerating, they want us to buy them products so badly that sometimes, adverts show up very often which that can annoy us.
For example, in a movie break, the commercials take lots of time that sometimes makes us change channel or turn off the TV. Or in a web site, commercials can be a real drag, it open us pages that we didn’t expected, and make us dislike that.
So, Sites, or TV channels that are paid to publish adverts, may take actions, or they may loose audience. Adverts must exist, but in a normal and controlled way.
Not with lies or with this sneaky tricks.
Remember that we don’t need to live surrounded by adverts all the time telling us what product to buy.
