He has challenged the “Big Four” (EMI Music North America, Sony, Warner Music and Universal Music Group) for bribing radio executives to play their material. He brought it to Sony BMG Music Entertainment in July 2005 by making them pay $10 Million in fines for bribing radio employees to feature its artists. Sony BMG also agreed to hire a person to monitor promotion practices and to make sure that business is run in a compliant and ethical manner. But that persons pay check will probably be signed by the same person who signed the pay off checks to the radio stations so what’s the point?

My plight is not with what was done to stop the big four, but the prolonged damage they have caused by causing the radio executives to become accustom to these types of tactics. Now who is watching the radio stations? Why are the record labels made to pay when the radio executives are the ones who take the money and play the music? The radio stations have a say in what airs and they are heavily regulated by the Federal Communications Commission. The radio stations primary source of income is solely to be generated on the sales of advertisement air time. The reason there are thousands of record companies in this country with unsuccessful artists is not due to the lack of talent, but to the lack of funds it takes for national or even local rotation, AND THAT’S A FACT JACK!!! NY, LA, Nashville, Miami, Houston all key markets with radio stations that don’t care for talent but for what the talent can bring to the negotiation table.

Let’s hope Mr. Spitzer leaves his predecessor a list of unfinished ass whippins which shows radio stations who “Take to Play”.
