We'll start with the most important reason of all —money.  Why should you  invest time and effort into building a business as an affiliate marketer?  Quite simply, building an affiliate business is one of the  least expensive businesses you could start.  In fact, it doesn't have to cost you anything to start marketing as an affiliate. Most affiliate programs are free to sign up for.

But what about websites and hosting costs?  You can host your site for free as well, although I wouldn't recommend that. You can host several websites for under $10 at HostGator and other quality web hosts. Host Gator comes with a site builder so that you can build a professional looking website without knowing a stitch of HTML. There are many different templates as well, so you can choose one that is appropriate for the niche that you are targeting. If you can type, then you can build a great looking site, so there really is no excuse.

But if you really have no money to spend, then build Squidoo lenses, Hub Pages or start a Blogger Blog. All of these are simple and easy to use and you can market very successfully as an affiliate with these tools alone.

Time

The time factor is one that many people cite as a reason as to why they can't start an online business. But affiliate marketing is actually something that can be done in your spare time, and is one of the least time intensive online money making opportunities avaliable.
 
That's because most of the work has already been done for you.
They've written the ads, crafted the web copy, designed the graphics, and in many cases built complete affiliate websites.  All you have to do is find somewhere to host these ready built sites so that people can find your links and click through to buy from your
ads so that you can earn a percentage of those sales. 

All you have to do is put the right product in the right place at the right time.  Of
course, there are many ways to do this and it's up to you to experiment with what works bets. You can make the time to build a successful affiliate business.  You can do it
part time, investing only a few hours a week or fulltime. That just depends on you and your particular circumstances.

Effort.

If anyone promises you easy money without any hard work, run as fast as you can. I know that the promise of easy wealth is tempting, but like effortless weight loss, it's just a dream. In the real world you have to put time and effort into your affiliate marketing business if you hope to succeed.  You won't be putting in as much effort, say, as the guy person who is creating their own hand crafted product and seling it online, but you will have to put some real, focused effort into being an affiliate—at first.
 
Much of the time and effort that is required is only in the beginning when you need to build a solid foundation and establish your reputation and get as many links out there as possible.  You may also need to spend some time learning the basics, such as building a website, writing compelling ads and uploading your site and so on. maintain your business.  In my experience, it takes about 30 hours of solid work (an
hour at a time or a day at a time) to build a solid foundation, but once that is done  all you
have to do is maintain it. That should take an hour or two a week.  Once you reach this level of maintenance, that's where you can really relax. Or you may choose to start another affiliate marketing income stream, adding more and more so that your income is continually growing and expanding.

What does every person want? Freedom! The freedom to do what you want to when you want to. And affiliate marketing has the potential to provide you with just that sort of lifestyle.
  There really is no greater level of flexibility than a business
that runs itself.  And that is the beauty of  internet marketing.  It's why
everyone wants to be in an e-business.  Because the Internet runs 24/7 you have the potential to make money while you sleep, are on vacation or spending time with your family. In fact many of my sales come when I'm doing something else. I love the fact that I don't have to be physically present to make money.  

Income Potential 

The income potential of affiliate marketing is virtually limitless. I love the fact that I get paid over and over for work that I do once. It may take me 30 minutes to write an article and submit it to an article directory, but that article can earn affiliate commissions for me for years to come. 

In one word— YES.  It most certainly can.  And it is being done every day by Super Affiliates around the globe. But what is a Super Affiliate and how does that differ from just being an affiliate?
 
A Super Affiliate is an affiliate that earns mega bucks marketing affiliate products. Many of them earn six figure incomes through affiliate marketing whilst other affiliates are lucky to earn a few hundred dollars.
 
What sets these Super Affiliates apart from the rest of the struggling masses? What really sets them apart is knowing the tricks of the trade that make it possible for ordinary guys and girls to make it big. That's what I want to share with you in this series of articles on affiliate marketing.
 
Every day, Super Affiliates are making big bucks doing very little hard work.  That doesn't mean that they don't ever work hard. Super Affiliates most certainly do.  But once the initial bulk of the work is done, then it's simply a question of maintenance.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest and fastest ways to make money online.  The key is knowing how to work smarter, not harder, and to lay a solid foundation that will make you money while you play, go on vacation or sleep.

If you think that the money is going to roll in simply by pasting a few banners and links on your site, them you are sorely mistaken. It's going to take some work and a careful, well thought out and well executed marketing strategy.
 
The first thing you are going to have to do is to educate yourself about all the in's and out's of affiliate marketing - what works and what doesn't. And then you need to apply what you have learned. Unfortunately it's in the application of the marketing principles that most affiliate marketer's fail. They spend hours learning and then do nothing with what they have learned.

Another myth that is quite rife in affiliate marketing circles is that money can be made almost instantly. This myth has caused many affiliate marketers to give up too soon.
 
The primary factor that separates the Super Affiliate from the rest is perseverance.  While it's certainly possible to start seeing a respectable residual income in short time, it is not very realistic to make an entire living off affiliate marketing that quickly. 

It  takes time to see results, and it takes effort to put all the pieces in place so that your affiliate program can start making money on autopilot.  But one the fundamentals are in place, you can truly have hands off automated income.

Most people fail as affiliates because of two main reasons:

• They fail to lay a solid foundation
• They don't give it enough time.

If you are you willing, able, and prepared to put in some hard work initially as well as to persevere, you should be able to replace your current income, or to increase your income, and you'll be able to sustain that income on just a few hours of work each week.

Well, I guess the honest answer is a cautious “maybe”, even if the first, reactive answer was a resounding YES!

The ultimate in cost reduction wouldn't be the title of this brief article; it's actually getting to drive a free car! I can hear you asking “How?” already. If you live in the US, Canada and the UK particularly, it's not too hard to find companies who are willing to pay to qualified applicants. Even France and Spain also have a number, and it's growing too in Australia.

Why do they pay? Simple. They pay you to carry advertisements on your car, or the free one they give you. I should state at this point that the actual chances of qualifying to be given a free car covered in an advert are pretty slim. You'd need to live in a major city, with a spotlessly clean driving record, drive at least 25,000 miles a year, preferably double that, and be prepared to park your somewhere at night where it is still going to be secure, but widely seen. You must wash it at least weekly, have it maintained to the manufacturer's specs and avoid accidents at all costs! Actually the maintenance is usually paid by the sponsor and all you have to pay is the gas, insurance and road tax. In some countries you may have to pay an advertising license too, although the sponsors are more likely to pay.

Far more though, will qualify for schemes which pay you to drive your own car, also of course, carrying an advert. With most schemes, you don't get to choose which ad can now adorn your car, but you can refuse one which you don't like. However, doing that will put you back in the queue again, for these are very popular schemes.

I've seen ads by some very well known names, such as:

• Yahoo!
• Sony
• Toshiba
• ABC
• HBO
• IBM
• Tic-Tac mints and so on
• Smaller local companies also take advantage of this form of mobile advertising

Naturally, the more your car is wrapped in the ad, even almost 100% (except the windscreen and most of the rest of the windows), the more you'll be paid. Living in a major city, such as Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Paris or Madrid, will push up your pay too (New York is a no-no unfortunately, as mobile advertising is banned in NYC). Schemes vary enormously, but of the companies I am prepared to promote as affiliate partners on my website (see below), have sponsors who will pay anything from around $400 per month up to as much as $3,000 or slightly more. These very high payers are few and far between, but who among us would turn down $4-500 pm as extra income? I know I wouldn't.

As I've commented in the article “Internet and Affiliate Marketing”, also on this site, you should be very wary, however, of spending any money, no matter how small, before you're as satisfied as you can be as to the honesty and integrity of the web sites offering this type of deal. You should know that it is not the advertisers or even the advertising agencies themselves who offer to you directly, but third party service providers, not all of whom, sad to say, are genuine.

On my website, I've only agreed to join affiliate partners from whom you can confirm that sponsors do exist in, or close to where you live. Too many sites want you to pay first, and only then will they provide you with the directory of sponsors. Don't touch these sites with a barge pole.

You should be looking for a merchant that has been in a business for at least a couple of years and has reputation as well. Send them an e-mail asking about their affiliate program. If you don't receive any reply from merchant side in few days then it's a sign that the company is not good to get into affiliate program. Another thing to look for is a contact phone for affiliate support.

Check the merchant website, it must have detailed information about the products and information about products they are selling online. If such information is missing, be cautious. Most of the companies those use affiliate marketing are sincere, however, there are scam artists are their as well. In case a website devotes a lot of information about how much money you will be making with their program, this should be a red flag. If the merchant charges a membership fee, move on, because a true affiliate program will pay you, not the other way around.

You need to look about the affiliate income pay schedule as well. Some merchants pay weekly, some monthly, quarterly or if the affiliate has earned a certain amount of money. This also depends on you when you wanted to have your affiliate income. In that case if you are looking for a weekly or bi-weekly income, you apparently want to stick with programs that pay on that schedule. If you are good with a longer payment cycle, then you can choose any of the option that is available on merchant website.

Affiliate program can be an awesome method to earn a part-time supplemental income. All you need to do some research before you select a program which is necessary as well. Make sure the merchant you are working with is a genuine company with a well-known reputation before you apply for it.

There's more to choosing a company with which to affiliate than picking the one that's been in business the longest, however. While start-up companies that are just getting their feet wet present a serious risk to your long term affiliate revenue, sometimes you have to take that risk to sign on with someone that's new, fresh and able to quickly adapt to the changes in the marketplace.

Most companies crumble within the first five years, unable to continue to pay their expenses for the length of time it takes to establish themselves and begin showing a profit. If you can find a company with which to affiliate that has made it past that five year mark, however, you can be fairly certain that they're going to stick around for a while-and continue pumping your pockets full of affiliate revenue for years to come.

It's important to consider stability when choosing a company, but it's also important to consider their adaptability. The world of e-commerce is a fast changing market. The Internet never sleeps, and companies that aren't prepared with the resources they need to stay on top of these changes in technology are going to quickly find themselves crushed beneath the wheels of change (and dragging their affiliates down with them.)

Often companies that have been at the top of their field since the dinosaurs roamed the earth are resistant to change. These predators find themselves becoming prey as they are replaced by new members of a younger generation that have cut their teeth on the Internet and are better prepared to take their companies out into cyberspace. Many of them firmly subscribe to the theory of, “If it's not broke, don't fix it.” If they're continuing to make a profit doing what they've always done, why should they change?

If you're looking to make a long term affiliate revenue you want to steer clear of these prehistoric throwbacks with their minds stuck in the Stone Age. A company that's at the top of its game now could easily find itself knocked into bankruptcy within the next year as its clientele move on to other companies that are “hip”, “fresh” and able to keep up with the rapid changes in today's marketplace.

How can you tell if a company is going to be a dinosaur or a roadrunner? Take a look at their past history. A company that has been in business for fifty years must be doing something right. What is it? More importantly, are they continuing to do it? Have they made the leap out onto the Internet, not only operating a website but actively promoting it as well? These companies, the ones that are able to stay on top of change and not find themselves crushed beneath it, are the ones that are going to provide you with the long term affiliate revenue you need.

Some affiliate programs pay commission to their members for life. If a customer uses your link to sign up for something or make a purchase, they become your customer for life. These types of programs are the cornerstone for creating residual income with affiliate programs.

The normal way to earn money from affiliates is to advertise your affiliate link and get people to click through to the site using it, and then make a purchase. Many affiliate programs only pay you for sales directly from your specific link.

Other programs create residual income streams by remembering who your customers are and crediting you for every sale or sign up. These lifetime residual income affiliate programs are just one of the types you can choose.
