If It's Free, Why Do You Need my Credit Card Number?

Consider this as the first rule if you shop online for anything; every company that is in business is in business to make money. None of them are in business to give you something for nothing. Why does everyone seem to forget that, especially when getting that “something for nothing” off the internet?

The first red flag for me with respect to internet sales companies that are giving me something free; Why do they need my credit card number? It is free… right? Oh, now I see the small print. That is to cover the shipping and handling. I do thank you for offering to give me your product for free, but I think I can get it for less money than your “free” at Wal-Mart. Their shelf price seems to be less than your shipping and handling.

As consumers, sometimes we get wrapped up in the “free”, the “save”, the “sale” tagline associated with an advertised product that we tend to forget the bottom line; how much came out of my wallet, or my bank account, or how much was charged to my credit card? What did I spend? Believe me sometimes the “free” items cost the most because of the shipping and handling.

To me this would not be quite so bad if my day job was not as an accountant, a profession in which I try to make sense of numbers. The shipping and handling cannot be as expensive as the charge they want to lay on you for the “free” items they are giving you and you should be especially leery if they want to give you even more “free” stuff to go with the initial “free” item. That additional “free” stuff has an additional shipping and handling charge.

Here is an example of the shipping and handling issue, admittedly the merchant is not offering her product for free. She is upfront about the cost of the product… well, sort of. If you have ever watched the television add for Debbie Meyer's Green Bags you should stop to think about it before you buy the product. Debbie Meyer is selling you plastic bags! I believe she asks around $10.00 for ten plastic bags! Whether or not those bags are anything more than plastic bags is a subject for another column, one which I did write. For now, let's focus on something else… the shipping and handling.

Remember, Debbie is going to send you 10 plastic bags for $10.00 and charge you $7.95 to mail them to you. I looked in Wal-Mart; plastic bags are much cheaper there. Debbie wants to hit your credit card for around $17.95 and $7.95 of that is to mail plastic bags to you. Consider the weight of plastic bags and do some math on reasonable shipping and handling costs.

Oh, but wait! I just remembered she doubles the offer. I believe you actually get 20 plastic bags for $10.00. To be fair though, since she is giving you something “free”, you do have to pay additional shipping and handling. Here is my most important tip of the day; check the price of plastic bags at Wal-Mart before you order them from Debbie.

Are there some good buys out there? Yes, but there are far more “lure me in” advertisements than there are good buys. If the advertisement offers you anything “free”, let that be your first red flag. You are about to be fleeced. Rule number one no one is in business to give you anything free. If so, why do they need your credit card number; and believe me they all want your credit card number before you get the “free” item.

Over the past few years I have purchased several things off the internet and I did purchase one thing from a television advertisement. I knew what I was getting and that the amount charged for the item was a fair price. In all cases, I looked for the hidden costs, shipping and handling was the big one and I was actually able to get one merchant to cut the shipping and handling cost in half. Always ask them to do that! The test for me was whether or not I could get the product for less any other way. I could not, so I purchased knowing full well the “total” cost was reasonable.

So for those of you who are not yet convinced here is my offer; you can have my mystery/romance ebook, The Men's Room Attendant, for free, but you have to give me $4.99 for the shipping and handling, which is a download from my website. Ridiculous; yes it is. I am in business to make a profit, nothing is free! All of the other business websites are in business to make a profit too. Do the math on the true cost before you give out your credit card number.

Too Many People Claim Free At-Home Jobs

Its easy to say something is free, as long as the money after the trial that they don't mention isn't stated. I recently went to a website and it wasn't mentioned. So, I said how long does trial last and how much is it each month? Well, they finally after repeating the 7 day trial 3 times. On my 4th answer they finally said its $30 a month.

Or you get on a site that says free then you see at the very bottom except for the $200.00 upfront cost to get started. Another red light is when they don't put in their address or phone number and zip code on the contact us section.

I know making money in this society is a dog eat dog world. But, when does humanity come back into play and start helping by sponsoring people who would like to feel the dephs of your success for just one day!

Six Steps to Starting a Home-based Business

Starting a home-based business makes a lot of sense in the new economy. Americans feeling the cash crunch are spending more time at home. Opening up a home-based business has never been easier. The internet connects you with people who are likely to buy your products or services and with professionals who can supply you with business prowess. Need some help getting your business idea off the ground? Here are some tips to help.

#1 Assess Your Strengths

Are you a good writer? Practice and be the best writer you can be. If you enjoy kayaking, perhaps you can pitch a story to an outdoor publication. Maybe you are a civil engineer with an interest in green construction practices. Have a knack with computers? A repair service just might put a little more jingle in your pockets. The possibilities are endless - closet organization, auto detailing, business consulting, photographing special events, tailoring - ask a close friend or family member if you are struggling to find your niche.

#2 Determine Who Will Buy What You Are Selling

When Ami Moore, a Chicago Dog Trainer, started Doggie Do Right to coach dogs and pet parents to live together harmoniously, she networked endlessly. “I partnered with veterinarians, gave advice to pet parents of rehomed dogs and looked for opportunities to promote my business in online communities.” Her plan worked. In 2005, she hit six figures. Ami did several things right that you can do to home in on your target buyers. She turned to bona fide plugged in communities and turned them into referral sources to minimize her advertising costs.

#3 Evaluate The Competition

If you want to offer a scrapbooking tutorial and there are five scrapbooking stores offering lesson within a five block radius of you, find a different angle. Maybe you can specialize in a type of book or paper, or you've developed a technique none of your competitors use. Instead of a run of the mill cleaning service, use only all-natural products. The bonus is by positioning yourself as an expert, above all the fray, the perceived value of your services is greater… which means you can charge more.

#4 Pricing

Ami Moore chuckles when she recounts one of her former competitors. “He hung advertisements on doorknobs, wallpapered the community with fliers and had no takers. He reduced his prices and even offered free lessons. When he finally landed a paying dog training client, he was losing money.” Turns out the value of his service wasn't at issue - he was focusing on a planned community that banned dogs. Think about where you are looking for clients and what the marketplace is. Lawyers may have more room to pay $100 for advertising design than a trucking firm. While you build up your business, don't be afraid to be flexible on your pricing strategy.

#5 Promote Yourself

Networking is key, as illustrated by Ami Moore's success. But you need materials you can leave behind with prospects. Ami always carried an extra leash with her website imprinted on it to send home with someone who forgot one, had one too short for the park, or maybe the dog escaped the off-leash area. She had professionally printed business cards and brochures. As the revenue rolled in, she upgraded her dogdoright website and hired a publicist, which she thinks gave her better results than constantly advertising. Promotional items can be excellent if they are relevant to your target audience.

#6 Get Business Help

Most communities have a small business resource center funded by the local government, the SBA, or the Chamber of Commerce. These are all free services, or available for a nominal fee. You also gain access to SCORE, which are retired executives who may have expertise in your field. Why pay thousands in consulting fees if those same services are available at no cost? Invest $1,000 or so with an accountant to set up your books properly if you've never done it before. You will pick up a wealth of information from your consultation, and ensure you are on the right path.

Start your venture part time if you have steady income already. If it starts to take off, evaluate the pros and cons of doing it full-time. Will your gas savings, for instance, offset your loss of a 401k match from your job? Where will your health insurance come from? Once you make your decision to start your home-based business, don't be afraid to follow your dreams!

Do Free Credit Repair Services Really Work?

The short answer would be no. But this answer would be a disservice to a fairly complicated subject.

As I learned from my own experience after a particularly messy divorce, my credit was shot and I had bills up the wazoo! I would describe into whose wazoo I wanted to place these bills, but that would be an altogether different article.

As we move towards a more connected society, a person's credit rating becomes ever more important. Being approved for loans, the interest rate you receive, even employment opportunities can be affected by your credit rating. Knowing this I decided to find a free credit repair service.

The first thing I learned is that there are two different processes. Credit repair, and Debt consolidation.

Firstly, I realized that I would benefit from debt consolidation. This is a service that is beneficial if you currently have unpaid bills, and more particularly, if you have accounts in arrears. In a nutshell the service will work like this: The Company will take stock of all of your debt payments, and then contact these debtors, (Credit card companies, Mortgage companies' auto loan holders, etc.) Your consolidator will then negotiate better terms for you. Such as lower payments, lower interest, or Partial debt forgiveness. Then they will request one monthly payment from you, to cover all of the combined debt. Keep in mind that the consolidation company will also charge a little over the debt payment, as their fee. Usually there is no up-front payment, so this is how they are reimbursed. In my case for an approximate monthly payment of $532, I paid an additional 48 dollars. But I realize they must also make a living. I used Care One, and I was quite satisfied. They were professional, timely, and always returned my correspondence.

Now here's the rub; if you consolidate your debt using this method, it WILL show on your credit report. But it is far better to use this method, than to have an account in collection, or worse...Bankruptcy on your report.

After this step is taken, if needed, it is time to repair your credit. Of course the first thing I did was to seek a free credit repair service. I tried several of them. But to no avail. But I did learn a few of their tricks that they used to hook me in. To be fair, in my heart of hearts, I could not understand how they could offer this service for free. And of course they didn't. You will get advice to begin, but you will be told that you must upgrade for the "good" advice, and the "premium" services. Sound familiar? I guess the old wisdom is true; maybe there is no such thing as a free lunch. But then again why should there be? You get what you pay for! Pound wise and penny foolish... A stitch in time.... Ok I stopped... (I am addicted to adages!)

I tried four different free credit repair services, and was to a greater or lesser degree, disappointed. In the end I went to a local accountant specializing in this service. He asked me question, viewed my documents and situations. Then he actually helped repair my credit. Not t perfect but much better than it was. Sure, I paid a total of $350, but I believe the improvement in my credit saved me FAR more than $350!

So, in my not so humble opinion, with the hell of experience under my belt, I will leave you with this: If you have current, debt that you are having major problems repaying, use a consolidator. I recommend Care One, but I am sure there are others just as reputable. As for the free credit repair services... I was disappointed. It is well worth it to pay a professional for this. Ask around, references from friends are usually the best.
But no matter what road you chose, do something now! Your credit does not repair itself. It will only grow worse in time if left unattended. I wish you luck... Been there, Done that.

How to Get Free Stock

Have you ever wanted to own a company? Here's your chance... sort of. You can own a piece of a company!

Free Stock

The Share Center is giving account holders 200 free shares in their company. You need to use their services a bit (not free) but it's worth it - the company is worth lots of money. Its IPO is in March. See .

My Free Shares is a website that pays just for being a member. You want it to go well because you own part of it, sort of.

Agloco (short for A Global Community) is a website with the motto “Own the Internet”. Download a “viewbar” so companies can advertise away in exchange for a piece of the company.

Not Exactly Free Stock

One Share is more of the “use shares as trinkets” type of thing. Buy shares in companies like McDonalds and get the certificate framed. However, Krispy Kreme's value (for one share) is only $2.36 while OneShare is selling a piece of the doughnut company for US$41.

Good luck.

Free Advertising Ideas for the Shoestring Budget

Free advertising works, however it can be small and slow to begin with, however anyone should be able to advertise for little to nothing with the right information and motivation.
I advertise free, both locally and nationally. I make and pass out flyers, making sure to contact 50 people weekly locally, and it is really impossible to estimate how many people nationally I contact. I do have quite a few visitors to my website, and many calls and emails for information, so I know what I do is working.

I also make sure I network and make contacts with others who work from home. We all have something that someone else can use. For example, I use Avon products, I like them, but not enough to market them however, so I purchase them from a lady I network with. Others see items that I have, and like them, but certainly not enough to market them, and they purchase from me. One hand washes the other. I cannot live without toilet paper, therefore I purchase it ...will I ever market toilet paper? Unlikely. But why not purchase it from someone who supports my business? I am going to get it somewhere, right?

When a person contacts me to purchase something from them, I realistically want something from it, other than just product ... I would like a referral, a purchase, a contact. This is what makes the world go around!! You help me, I help you, we all eat and we are all happy!! Remember this as individuals contact you regarding their product...and remember to do something for them as well!
