<![CDATA[<p>So, you have found your dream job and are aching to send your resume in and dazzle your prospective employer with relevant work experience and reasons for them to hire you.  However, to maximise your chance of gaining an interview, be sure to take a few minutes to write a personalised cover letter - it's your chance to stand out from the stack of other candidates all after the same role.</p>
 
<p>The humble cover letter is often overlooked, however the benefits of taking the time to write one far outweigh the time that you invest in doing so.  After all, if you are too lazy to explain why you would be the best candidate for the position, it is unlikely that your future employer will take the time to meet with you to find out more.</p>
 
<p>When writing your cover letter, the best start is to look at the advertisement for the position, and be sure to understand exactly what they are after.  Many ads list requirements for the position, such as:</p>
 
<ul>
<li> Strong listening and communication skills</li>
 
<li> A desire and ability to learn and share your own knowledge </li>
 
<li> You must be used to being responsible and being accountable for your actions and results </li>
 
</ul>
<p>When writing your letter, it pays to reiterate what they are saying in the ad, whilst putting it into your own words.  For example, using the first requirement, you could say &amp;ldquo;I possess excellent verbal and written communication skills&amp;rdquo;.</p>
 
<p>Obviously, the characteristics that the company is seeking varies between industries and roles, however most companies are seeking someone who is a fast learner and who is reliable as the costs of replacing employees are high.</p>
 
<p>Secondly, be sure to state why you feel that you would be suitable for the role.  For example, including a brief summary of relevant work experience is very useful, so that by the time they look at your resume they already believe that you are a suitable candidate.</p>
 
<p>Potential employers receive a large number of applications for advertised roles, so it is important to stand out from the other candidates.  A well written cover letter is a great opportunity to showcase your written communication skills, and enables you to provide additional information that may not be included in your resume.  Be sure to thank them for considering you for the role, and include contact information should they require further information.  Always address the letter, and write in a professional, polite tone.</p>
 
<p>Above all, always ensure that any claims you make are true (for example, if you tend to leave everything to the last minute, it is best not to claim that you are highly efficient).  If you have to lie on your application, chances are the role is not the one for you.</p>

<title>Set Yourself Apart From Other Job Applicants</title>

You can be &amp;ldquo;the cream that rises to the top&amp;rdquo; in your job search by doing things that will set you apart from others who are looking for work.</p>
 
<p>The first thing you must do before you have an interview scheduled is display professionalism. Fill out a job application neatly and completely. Follow all the instructions of an ad you are replying to. If you are replying my mail, use resume paper and a resume envelope. Do not provide an E-mail address on your cover letter or resume that is silly or weird. Your answering machine message must not be too long or sound crazy. If your name is John Doe, your message should say, &amp;ldquo;You have reached the home of John Doe. Please leave your name and number and I will call you back as soon as possible.&amp;rdquo;</p>
 
<p>Make your cover letter shine. To make your letter easy to read, use a font size of at least twelve points. The top left corner should reveal your full address, E-mail address, telephone number and the current date. After you type in this information, hit "Enter" four times and type in the name and address of the company you are sending your letter to.</p>
 
<p>Do not say &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rdquo; in your cover letter. A good way to avoid using &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rdquo; is to start the body of your cover letter with a header that says, &amp;ldquo;Subject: Response to your ad for the Sales Clerk position you posted on Sunday.&amp;rdquo;</p>
 
<p>Put great care into how you address the reader. It is not a good idea to write, &amp;ldquo;To whom it may concern.&amp;rdquo; If you know the name of the person who will read your letter, address the person by his or her name. If the person's name is Jane Doe, address her as &amp;ldquo;Ms. Doe&amp;rdquo;. If you do not know the contact's name, you should write, &amp;ldquo;Dear Sir or Madam.&amp;rdquo;</p>
 
<p>The next part of your cover letter should include a bulleted list of your accomplishments, background and skills. Do not supply a long list. I recommend you list up to five good skills and accomplishments that are relevant to the position you are applying for.</p>
 
<p>After you list your accomplishments and skills, close your letter by writing, &amp;ldquo;My resume has been enclosed. Please contact me for an interview when you are ready. Thank you in advance for your consideration.&amp;rdquo; Sign the letter in black or blue ink and place your written signature above your typed signature. Read your cover letter twice or more to eliminate any errors.</p>
 
<p>Like your cover letter, your resume should be easy to read, look professional and exclude &amp;ldquo;I&amp;rdquo;. Never use more than two pages for your resume. Include all the jobs and volunteer activities you have done for the past seven years. Provide your job titles, the dates you worked and the names of the companies you worked at.</p>
 
<p>Your resume must discuss results you have provided for your employers. If you are improving your company's bottom line and you have a measurable amount, you could write, &amp;ldquo;Improving the company's total amount of sales by twenty percent.&amp;rdquo;</p>
 
<p>We will now discuss what to do during and after a job interview. Are you familiar with the phrase that says, &amp;ldquo;A good first impression is a lasting impression?&amp;rdquo; You must do several things very well that will create a great image that will stick in the interviewer's mind forever and sway him or her to hire you first.</p>
 
<p>Arrive on time, perhaps five to ten minutes early - take a trip to the place of your interview at least one day early to make sure you can find the place okay. If you are a guy, wear dress shoes, a tie, dress pants and a suit jacket that does not have a loud color such as red, pink, purple, orange or yellow. If you are a lady, wear dress shoes and a suit or dress. Treat the receptionist with respect. Do not arrive with a tobacco smell or bad body odor.</p>
 
<p>Give the interviewer a firm handshake, warm smile and frequent eye contact. Answer questions fully and truthfully. Do not do anything stupid such as eating. Let the interviewer do most of the talking. Do not bring up your personal life or ask about the salary for the position.</p>
 
<p>Display a good attitude and good manners. Express a willingness to work a flexible schedule and a willingness to work extra hours when it is necessary. Show interest in the position by asking when you can start. Never attend an interview without doing research on the company, no matter what type of company it is. When I interviewed for a teaching assistant position, I was asked what I knew about the school district.</p>
 
<p>Thank the interviewer for the interview and ask for his or her business card at the end of the interview. Quickly send a thank-you note that reiterates your interest and qualifications. Call within a week to find out where you stand in the hiring process. <![CDATA[<p>Having read more resumes and cover letters than I care to remember, some clues have been assembled about how to make a cover letter do more than just be another page to a resume.  Not all employers and interviewers bother to read a cover letter.  I learned this from watching them in action from the job seeker's perspective.  There have been many times I have needed to refrain from saying, "You would know that if you had read my letter."  However, most of the time the cover letter is businesslike but friendly way to open the door to your resume.</p>
 
<p>If your resume is generic and being sent to many prospective employers for various positions, your cover letter needs to begin by stating what specific job you seek.  In a large corporation, a human resource person will be the first to scan the contents of your resume packet.  With possibly dozens of job openings, a clearly defined job title is needed for your resume to have a prayer of reaching the right hands.  If the letter is poorly written, the page will never be turned to look at the rest of the packet.  If it is turned, it will be viewed by eyes jaded from the inferior introduction.</p>
 
<p>The quality of the cover letter should equal your resume.  If you had your resume professional done, you may want to look for help when writing the letter.  People who read this material for a living will notice a sharp difference between the letter and the resume.  This difference can make a person wonder about the integrity of the resume.  Since the purpose of a resume is to open the door for an interview, you really do not want your integrity being questioned before the interview.</p>
 
<p>Professionally written resumes are not a problem unless the cover letter that you write looks more like grade school work.  If your writing skills are not strong, get some help with the letter.  This will keep the smile on the face of the reader.</p>
 
<p>The paper should roughly match.  It is better if everything is on the same type of paper.  This way it will not appear that the two documents were created separately.  Everyone knows that resumes are just reproduced forms, but no one really likes to have it slap them in the face.  So, if the paper matches and the letter is customized to fit the job, everyone pretends that you made it all up just for the one position.</p>
 
<p>Try to match the type style and font when producing the letter.  Too much variation screams that the letter and resume are separate documents.  This is all about you.  These documents should draw attention to you and not to the paper or printing.</p>
 
<p>Pull a few items from your resume to highlight in your cover letter.  Do not get too carried away with this.  Somewhere around two to four items will be plenty.  Make sure that these fit the job qualifications.  Mention that these can be seen on the resume.</p>
 
<p>If there are skills not listed on the resume that are necessary for the specific job, list these skills.  Make note of the fact that these skills are in addition to what is listed in the resume.  Anytime the resume can be referenced of mention up to about three times in the letter is a good thing. In a busy and stressful time it might seem logical to mass produce both cover letters and resumes, but if you have to chose one to mass-produce, the resume might be the way to go.</p>
<p>A good cover letter will give an employer an idea that you took the time to check-out their website, know what the company is about, and are willing to put up with the not-so-glamorous parts of the job that you both know are bound to exist.</p>
<p>If you applying to any job within the communications sector this becomes even more important, as stating that you are creative but sending in a carbon-copy template of a resume is too much of a contradiction right off the bat.</p>
<p>Keep the resume brief, a page at best. Stick to the experience that applies. After that, spend more of your time crafting a cover-letter that creates a fun and realistic invitation to yourself, try and get as much of your half of the interview in before it even happens.
