Winters are mild, which makes it easier to trade. Mercury, sulfur, and marble are great natural resources that keep Italy's economy at a great point. Italy is the world's leading producer of marble, mostly from the Apuane Alps. All other resources don't have a large enough availability to export. Marble helps Italy a lot, and the peninsula location helps population distribution on the coastline. Most of Italy is accessible by sea, which makes trade a LOT easier.
